La Mer de Glace - Chamonix
During your holidays in Chamonix, it will be impossible for you not to go to admire one of the most grandiose sites of the Alps: the sea of ice. With 7 kilometers long and 40 square kilometers in area, it is the largest glacier in France. It would be a shame to miss! This wonder of nature is the result of the confluence of the glacier of Tacul and that of Leschaux.Nowadays, more than one million visitors come to visit the Montenvers every year to contemplate the Mer de Glace. During peak periods, half of them visit the ice cave, its ephemeral sculptures and the sound and light animations that are offered. On the site, there are three museums and, in winter, it is possible to hurtle down the downhill from the Aiguille du Midi.In order to get there, you will take the Montenvers cogwheel railway, which travels in twenty minutes, at a speed of 14 to 20 km / h, the slope ranging from 11 to 22%. Many summer hikers and winter skiers come either from the intermediate platform of the Aiguille du Midi or Grands Montets cable car, ski or abseil, crossing the sea of ice, to join the staircase then the gondola access to the train. In winter, the sea ice goes skiing from the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car and after crossing the white valley. If the snow is sufficient, skiers arriving on the glacier join the rock of Montets which gives access to a track connecting with Chamonix. You really have to give a try on it !
